So I thought I would put this out there again and ask anyone how to compile/build a firmware for this router. I'm not really into linux so I'm having trouble understanding the very short instruction given by the author of custom firmware. Any help is appreciated. Also I would like very detailed description of what each command does so maybe I'll learn something on the way. I found the instructions in master/README.TXT. Not every package wanted to install so there's my first problem.
I really like the new AA88U and I would like to get more functionality out of it. I have gone to the ASUS website and found the one that looks the most promising. It is called Merlin with the new AA88U support and a bunch of other features. I have also set it up using the steps above and the instructions here: http://forums.asus.com/v6/showthread.php?t=1904126I am now able to connect to VPNs without any problems but I'm not satisfied yet that the performance is as good as it could be. I have found a couple of threads on the net and one on the router but I am finding it difficult to understand exactly what is needed to get the most out of the new firmware. This is mostly because it is so new.
LEDE is a distribution of DD-WRT firmware for ASUS RT-N56U routers. It has support forOpenVPN, USB tethering, and other features. There are three packages available: the singlex86_64 package, the i386 package, and the i586 package. While you can install any of them, you must first have at least 1GB of free space on your router's hard disk. You then need to be able to SSH into your router. For example, if you set up your router to allow port forwarding on port 22, you'll need to be able to SSH into it using your personal computer.
As mentioned above, the ASUS RT-N56U is supported by OpenWrt according to their Table ofHardware. Soflashing OpenWrt onto it should be quite straigthforward. We couldn't find any specific instructions for flashin OpenWrt on the ASUSRT-N56U, but since it's listed in their Table of Hardware as supported, you canhead over to the OpenWrt install instructions and read on there.
