Mbongeni Ngema--The Black Saint[Chisa, 1975]Now that his orkestrar is dead (along with the 1960s/70s mainstream mbaqanga), Ngema is the last great exception to the rule that genre musicians stick to their kind. He's made a career of breaking the rules, but here he moves back to the old traditions. He's not the greatest, but he's got a beautiful sense of melody. And he can make his pieces sound like a traditional folk chorus in a way that no one else has. A-
Nakumetse[Island, 1985]The major male figure in both the nationalist and liberationist movements, Nakumetse, the Zulu prophet, is worshipped in a different style than Mahlathini. The voices here are lighter, and the song deals with the same subject as Mahlathini's, but the attitude is more jovial. It's not afraid of sentiment. A-
Mahlathini--Ndodemvu[Island, 1985]Mahlathini, the AmaZulu singer/songwriter, is the only mbaqanga performer who's concerned with ecology, and this is one of his songs. The most elegiac and melancholy, it comes off as prime political statement; little of the traditional sentimentality is at work here, it's basically an argument for saving the earth and all its resources. B+
Soweto Blues [Rough Trade, 1990]With this final entry in their series of polemical albums, the Anti-Cultures swerve past the goal of laying a broadside against the white power state--they're not big fans of that audience--and simply make a statement of black music. B-
Africanisms--Goldberg Variations [Bluesville, 1991]This essay in eclectic styles is about as close to thinking through the history of black music as you can get--and it's as idiosyncratic as the music it considers. (You can pick out a few of my favorites here, and it's not hard to find others.) But it's not a book--there's no sense of narrative or change. It's a continual journey through Afrikaans-language pieces.
