The plotline of the first book, Horus Rising, had involved the collapse of the Imperial Navy, the Terran Hegemony and the Adeptus Terra's orbital fleets. The fall of the Imperial Navy had been occasioned by a plot in which a newly-promoted Adeptus Mechanicus Master of Machines, Horus, and the Knight-Captain of the Imperial Fists, Orgus, had joined forces to destroy Horus' brother, The Emperor. The two had assassinated the Emperor, usurping his status as Emperor.
As the 11th anniversary approached, the Horus Heresy was seen by most as a series in its maturity phase.[ top ] Even so, the announcement of a new trilogy (Book 23 in the series) raised a mild degree of scepticism.[ top ] The new books would be illustrated by more than 100 artists, the bulk of whom had been involved in the series from its earliest stages. The earlier volumes had been illustrated mainly by artists who shared the art director's and editor's backgrounds (such as John Harris), and the new books would therefore likely attract new artists.[ top ]
The Horus Heresy cast of characters had also grown: almost the entire main cast from the third and fourth volumes had reappeared in the trilogy.[ top ] Book 23 would feature two of the main characters from the earlier series, while a third would be written out of the series by the end of the year, with a new plotline to be used in the next, 14th volume.[ top ]
Horus and Orgus' alliance against the Imperial Navy had been a decade-long conspiracy, stretching back to a time when the Segmentum Obscurus had been created. The fall of the Empire had been orchestrated by a separate conspiracy of the Adeptus Mechanicus, who had been determined to supplant the Emperor with a Horus-controlled body of Androids. The Emperor had fled the Solar System, leaving the Knights of Terra to face a civil war, with the Segmentum Obscurus in the major battleground.
The development of the audio market in the UK can be seen in the increasing sales charts for the Audible service, which has been distributed by WH Smith since 2004[58] but has The Horus Heresy novels available only from its website (previously the same web link was used to download the same books as the printed versions, but in 2012 it resulted in an error message). The Blood of Gods, At the Abyss and Exile were released in audiobook format simultaneously with the print books in 2007: since then, they have been the only Audible releases in the series. Battle for Ricinus was added to Audible in November 2010 and was released in audiobook format in May 2011. Horus Rising was released on audiobook in May 2011. Darkness Calls, the first book in a new spin-off series, was released in audiobook format on November 19, 2011, but the print version came out the following day. 827ec27edc
