Ultimately, though, this isn't a case where you can't buy a better Windows computer for less money. (You can, of course.) Refurbished ThinkPads and other OEM Windows PCs offer great value at a price and availability you won't find from other manufacturers. And they save you the headache of adjusting to upgrading Windows from Windows 10, which is a terrible option if you don't use legacy software. We found that the X1 Carbon stands out from the crowd with its solid build quality, ample screen, supremely comfortable keyboard, non-drag-and-tumble design, and fantastic performance.
Personally, though, I'd still choose the Surface Pro 7 as a replacement PC for my home and office computer over the X1 Carbon. The X1 Carbon manages to blend excellent performance (4-plus hours of battery life) with a superior display and keyboard, but it doesn't do such a great job of showing off the Surface Pro 7's quad-core Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. (The X1 Carbon boasts a Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM.) More importantly, storage space is the X1 Carbon's bigger weakness, the machine struggling to handle the load of SD card storage demands that many apps make. It's also on the heavy side, weighing up to 2.5 pounds more than the Pro 7.
In exchange for those oversights, though, it offers a stunning display and powerful performance, along with the best keyboard on any Windows tablet and the most-comfortable 2-in-1 on the market. And it has a built-in keyboard to boot. d2c66b5586
