Sega Genesis games have gotten more and more rare of the years. Some could fetch upwards of $30,000!
Below you will see two prices beside each title. The first is the average daily selling price, which is typically the going rate for the game cartridge by itself. The second price is the highest price in the past three months, which is usually for a gem mint copy with manuals included, etc. (Sealed game values, when available will be listed beside in parenthesis). The list is ordered by the balance of the two cartridge-only and mint prices. Note that some of these games are not rare in the sense that there are not many available, but rare relative to demand, which makes the games expensive.
Much like the competition carts mentioned in the NES and SNES rare and valuable lists, Blockbuster World Championships II is a special promotional cartridge developed by Acclaim that was utilized in various Blockbuster stores during a contest they held to see who could get the most points in truncated versions of NBA Jam and Judge Dredd to compete for prizes. In the case of this Genesis game, the cartridge was never meant to be distributed.
There has been an especially strong premium on rather rare games that also have a cardboard box variant as long as that box is in great condition. As a Genesis fan, I always tried to shy aware from those cardboard boxes as they are a pain to keep looking nice (and I just liked the protective value and sharp look of the hard cases).
Normys beach babe o rama is definately one of the rarest games for the pal megadrive, you can buy it fairly cheap but hardly ever shows up, unlike streets of rage 3 which is not rare at all but fetches around £40 on average now. Possibly one of the rarest games ever made, it is believed that only ten copies of Tetris on the Sega Genesis ever existed. A copy of the game was sold at auction for $16,000 in 2008. Another copy signed by creator Alexey Pajitnov was put up for auction at $1,000,000 dollars. The cartridge never sold but offers of around $20,000 were turned down at the time.
The rights to the game were also sold to overseas companies such as Atari Games and Bullet-Proof Software for sales in the west. However, when the game was made in Japan for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), legal wranglings meant the game never got produced. A handful of copies were made, but these games are so rare the chances of you ever owning one are practically zero!

While it's easy to pick up a lot of the more popular retro games, there are also a ton of them that are not so easy to find. There are quite a few retro games that have become incredibly rare in the years since their release and because of that, they now cost a lot of money for dedicated collectors to get their hands on. Even though this game has been re-released over and over, finding an original Sega CD version of it isn't easy. Like many other Sega CD games, this game being available on other consoles hasn't stopped the Sega CD version from becoming super rare. To get a complete, new copy of the game, collectors will have to pay up $487.
The Sega Genesis competed head-to-head with the Super Nintendo in the 1990's and during this time hundreds of great games were released. A few of these games have become rare collectibles and very expensive in some cases. Below is a list of the rarest and most expensive Sega Genesis games.
Blockbuster Video held a national video game competition at their stores in 1994. Players could compete on Donkey Kong Country Competition (see rare SNES list) or a Genesis game called Blockbuster World Championships II. The cartridge contained NBA Jam and Judge Dredd and gave a combined high score for your performance in both games.
@Port - Thanks for your comment. The tattoo pack-in is interesting to know about. I hadn't heard that before.I've been selling Sega Genesis games for 13 years and I have only sold 15 "The Punisher" games during that entire time. (I've sold 590 Sonic 2's during this same time period as a comparison). It might not be as rare as other titles but it is far from common.
Though the Sega Genesis is no longer being produced, there are many sellers and buyers collecting the old and rare Sega Genesis games. The rarest of the games are very valuable to game collectors.
If you are currently in possession of any of the following Sega Genesis rare games, Sega MegaDrive Games, or home-brew games for Sega, you may want to continue to hold onto them. It is likely that their value will continue to increase as time continues to pass.
The prices of the rare Genesis games listed below in the Sega Genesis price guide are based on a 90-day history from the time that this list was created. This rare game was not intended to fall into the hands of gamers. Instead, Blockbuster stores were supposed to use them in stores for a nation-wide video game competition. At the conclusion of the competition, the games were supposed to be returned. Because this game was not actually sold to consumers, it is incredibly rare. In fact, it is so rare that it typically cannot be found for sale on Amazon or Ebay. However, a few collectors own copies of this game making it highly valuable.
Outback Joey is a Sega Genesis rarity due to the low number of copies produced (1,000 units). The game was sold as a bundle along with the Heartbeat Personal Trainer. The game has to be played while using the Heartbeat Personal Trainer equipment. Just a few collectors are known to possess copies of this rare games. As a result, the ROM has not yet been dumped. For 1k or 2k, you may eventually be able to get your hands on a copy of this cartridge. Just remember, you need the Heartbeat Personal Trainer equipment for this to be a playable game.
This turn-based (hexagonal) strategy game released back in 1991 is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Gamers who played this game would move their monsters around the game board as they worked to defeat other players. Two sequels to this game (Master of Monsters Value Edition and Masumon Kids) was later created due to the success of Master of Monsters. However, this original version has become a rarity. If you do come across this game, you will likely find it being sold for a pretty hefty price. This rare game is most valuable if you can find it brand new.
There are two versions of these Blockbuster Game Factory cartridges. There was a blue cartridge as well as this green one. This made-for-Blockbuster cartridge had a bit more flash memory space than its blue counterpart. Otherwise, it is exactly the same. These cartridges were created exclusively for Blockbuster stores to load games onto for customers. After the system was phased out at Blockbuster stores, the cartridges were supposed to be returned to the system owners. However, some customers held onto the game factory cartridges, and some Blockbuster employees took them home to keep. As a result, these cartridges are rather rare and fairly valuable. Some of the cartridges still contain games that had been loaded onto them, although many of the remaining few are blank.
The championship version of this 1993 Sega Genesis game was a rental exclusive which has helped make this edition a rare find. It was only sold at rental shops after it had been rented out. If you can find the box and the instructions altogether, you can get this championship edition for a small price! The difference between the standard version of this 1993 game and the championship edition described here is that the championship version included football teams from 1966 through 1991. The standard version included teams from 1992 only. As a result, the standard version of this game is not very rare or very valuable. If you find the championship edition of this John Madden Football game, you may want to invest in obtaining your own copy. 2b1af7f3a8
